The International Languages Program (Elementary) operated by the Toronto Catholic District School Board continues with its history of providing children with valuable opportunities to learn a third language and culture. When the Ministry of Education established Ontario’s Heritage Languages Program in July 1977, the TCDSB already had considerable experience in the field. As early as 1973, the Board, in cooperation with several community organizations, was piloting “Heritage Languages” classes for some 5,700 children in 14 schools.
International Languages Program (Elementary) is provided during the school day when at least 67 percent of the parents of a school request a language program to be established during the school day. Parents do not need to register for this program, as all children attending an Integrated Day IL School, will take the third language offered.
The International Languages Program includes: Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Filipino, Chinese, and Ukrainian. The IL Program is offered on the Extended Day basis in more than 45 schools.
Today, 84 Instructors teach a foreign language across many schools of the TCDSB and they risk on July 12 to be dismissed forever. They will be fired because someone decided that learning another language isn’t useful and worth it.
On July 12 at 6 pm at 80 Sheppard ave East will be held a special meeting with Trustees and Superintendents to decide the future of many students and teachers. We want you there to stand with us to stop this cruel action to cut a very beneficial program.
For the Administrators there is a problem to fit 30 minute of learning another language in 300 minutes of school a day. They are saying that this program take space and time to other subjects like art, math, literacy, etc. Without keep in mind the benefits of learning a foreign language in a multicultural city as Toronto, actually in a country as our Canada.
Here are just a few of the cognitive benefits to learning a foreign language:
– the concept of “object permanence” develops at a younger age.
– better problem solving skills.
– better critical thinking skills.
– more creativity.
– better flexibility of mind.
– enhanced memory.
– better multi-tasking abilities.
Come out and support us. Let’s speak up and don’t allow to cancel this program ran for 40 years and let’s get together with our child for a multi color, multi language, multi cultural awesome Country as Canada is.
